Digital Marketing A to Z: Attract, Convince, Sell

Module 1 — Positioning: why you and not someone else · 3 min de lecture

The problem is almost never visibility

What an account with 5,000 followers and no sales is really telling you.

"I need more visibility." That is the diagnosis nine entrepreneurs out of ten give themselves. It is almost always wrong — and it is expensive, because it pushes you to spend on advertising what you should have invested in thinking.

The five-second test

Open your page, your profile, your shop. Show it for five seconds to someone who doesn't know you, then hide the screen. Ask them: what do I sell, and to whom?

If they hesitate, no advertising campaign will fix your problem: you will simply pay for more people not to understand. That is exactly how an advertising budget disappears without producing a single customer.

What actually happens with an unclear message

Look at the second line. That is where 88% of the audience is lost — before any question of price, trust or competition. Doubling the first line costs money; doubling the second costs one afternoon of thinking.

Three symptoms of missing positioning

  • People always ask the price first — When value isn't understood, price becomes the only available criterion. That isn't a cheap customer, it's an incomplete message.
  • You accept every customer — "I work with everyone" means nobody feels particularly concerned. A message aimed at all convinces none.
  • You and your competitors use identical words — If you and five competitors all say "quality, reliability, best price", you are interchangeable. The customer will pick at random, or pick the cheapest.
Exercise 1

The five-second diagnosis

  1. Run the five-second test with five people who don't know your business.
  2. Write their answers word for word, without correcting them and without explaining.
  3. Count how many named both the right product AND the right customer.
  4. If the score is below 4 out of 5, do not spend a single franc on advertising before finishing this module.

À retenir

  • A visibility problem is almost always a clarity problem.
  • 88% of an audience is lost for failing to understand the offer in five seconds.
  • Paying to spread an unclear message multiplies confusion, not sales.
  • Positioning answers "why you", not "who you are".
